Bedford Borough Council is a busy Unitary Authority with an active and progressive Regulatory Services Group, covering Environmental Health & Trading Standards, Corporate Safety, Resilience, Flood Risk, Emergency Planning, Community Safety, CCTV and Bereavement Services.  We believe that our services should be delivered to the highest standard, leading the way in innovative approaches such as agile working to working and taking formal action in high profile cases.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Environmental Health Practitioner for the position of Team Leader to provide the lead specialist professional support to help ensure satisfactory delivery of the reactive and planned workload in relation to the Regulatory Services.  This will include functions of Community Regulation covering pollution, statutory nuisance, planning consultations, contaminated land, pollution prevention control and local air quality management.

The post holder will contribute to the delivery of relevant objectives outlined in the Regulatory Services Group Service Plan with a view to improving the health, safety and well-being of consumers, residents and workers within the Borough at work, at home and at leisure, whilst supporting the management and co-ordination of the team. 

This is an opportunity for a confident and experienced Environmental Health Practitioner to demonstrate their ability to positively influence the planned and reactive work load and performance of the team, in order to ensure the protection of the public.  The successful candidate will be expected to support a team of officers with their day to day activities providing support, guidance and quality monitoring as required.  The postholder will manage their own caseload and support the Service Manager (Community Regulation) to undertake actions such as Performance Development Reviews, 1-2-1’s, team meetings etc.

You will need recent experience of leading a team with the communication, organisational and team working skills to match.  The successful candidate will have a proven track record of working in a busy authority and demonstrating the necessary skills required of complex service delivery, managing projects and work streams whilst providing advice and guidance to other members of the team, as well as the allocation of inspections and service requests and the associated co-ordination of resources.

Applicants must hold the necessary qualifications and be able to demonstrate the competencies required in order to effectively carry out this role.  These may be a Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health, EHRB registration or equivalent, with significant experience relevant to the post, as well as a suitable post graduate qualification.  You will be required to work outside normal office hours, including some weekend work should the need arise.
